Venice is legendary for its many canals and is considered one of the world’s most romantic cities. It is set on 117 islands in the marshy saltwater Venetian Lagoon which is separated from the open sea by two long strips of land. Venice’s traditional architecture, mostly a local version of the Gothic style, and watery setting complete with gondolas steered by oarsmen dressed in traditional garb make for a picture postcard setting that charms visitors and Venetians alike. Here’s how to make the most of 2 days in this charming city:

Day 1: Exploring the Heart of Venice

Start your Venetian adventure in the iconic Piazza San Marco. This grand square, often called “the drawing room of Europe,” is home to several of Venice’s most famous landmarks. Visit St. Mark’s Basilica, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture, then venture to the Campanile (bell tower) for a panoramic view of the city.
In the afternoon, visit the Campo Santa Maria Formosa, one of Venice’s largest squares bordered by small shops and residential areas, the Church of San Giovanni de Paolo in the Cannaregio district, and the house of famous 13th century explorer Marco Polo. Later enjoy walking through narrow streets, alleys, and magical bridges, experiencing why Venice is considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities.
Day 2: Discovering the Grand Canal & Cannaregio District

Begin your second day in the Cannaregio district, one of the most authentic and charming areas of Venice. Visit the Jewish Ghetto, the oldest in the world, where you can explore the Jewish Museum and historic synagogues and enjoy some delicious kosher pastries from the local bakeries. Spend your afternoon immersing yourself in the Venetian lifestyle. Explore the nearby artisan shops that line the narrow streets of Cannaregio, offering handmade crafts, unique souvenirs, and perhaps a piece of Venetian glass to take home.
In the evening, enjoy a boat ride in a traditional gondola along the Grand Canal, Venice’s main “street” ! Admire the city from a different point of view. Palaces, churches, charming houses, shops, and other structures make for a fairy tale landscape taking you back to another time. Continue your ride through some of the smaller canals to discover the soul and intimate feel of this wonderful place.
After your boat tour, enjoy a relaxing dinner at a canal-side restaurant. Savor traditional Venetian dishes like bigoli in salsa or risi e bisi (rice and peas) and reflect on your Italian adventures as you dine by the water!
